Normally, a high-difficulty go-ahead shot with 1.7 seconds left wins you the game and is the highlight of the night. That wasn’t the case for USC Trojans’ senior guard Jordan McLaughlin Sunday night, though, as his spectacular drive and shot over two defenders to put USC up 76-74 over the Stanford Cardinal was eclipsed by what Stanford freshman guard Daejon Davis did on the ensuing possession:

Yep, that’s a buzzer-beating shot from 50 feet out, well beyond halfcourt, to give Stanford the 77-76 win. And it’s one of the most impressive daggers we’ve seen this season. It’s also quite the call: “Davis at the horn! UNBELIEVABLE! They’ll go to the monitors, but for the moment, the freshman, a hero for the Cardinal!” A hero indeed.

Davis has had quite the season so far for Stanford, starting all 13 games he’s played in and posting a career-high 22 points against UCLA earlier this week. Heading into this game, he led the Cardinal with 4.2 assists per game, and was part of an important freshman class of four players all averaging over 25 points per game. And he shone in this one; Reid Travis led the Cardinal with 25 points, but Davis had an important night in a variety of categories, finishing with nine points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block. And he made the most important shot of the night.
