San Diego State University intends to resign from the Mountain West Conference, the university reportedly told the conference this past week, which might set off another chain of conference realignment.
ESPN reporter Pete Thamel reported that SDSU notified the MWC of their intention to resign from the conference. According to Thamel, the university provided written notice to the conference. Thamel Tweeted, “San Diego State gave the Mountain West written notice this week that the school ‘intends to resign from the Mountain West Conference.’ SDSU asked the Mountain West for a ‘one-month extension given unforeseen delays involving other collegiate athletic conferences beyond our control,”
SDSU appears to be the latest school to see the writing on the wall and make a move. Several schools will join new conferences within the next two years. Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF are poised to join the Big 12 for the 2023-24 academic year. In 2024 Oklahoma and Texas will join the SEC, and UCLA and USC will join the Big Ten.
This is another sizable news item in the world of college sports. It’s never dull and, lately, it’s hard to stay in one place because someone or some school is always on the move. Conference realignment really ramped it up in the early 2010s, and now it’s coming around the bend again.
After the news was reported, college sports fans had lots to say about the SDSU – conference realignment news.
I kinda hope the Pac-12 media deal logjam lasts for years https://t.co/fH1hsxmauZ
