ABC broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit talks to Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day prior to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. on Jan. 1, 2022. College Football Rose Bowl

Ohio State Buckeyes fans have enjoyed nearly two decades of consistent quarterback play. This season, however, head coach Ryan Day enters with two largely unknowns at quarterback: Junior Kyle McCord and redshirt freshman Devin Brown. Ohio State legend Kirk Herbstreit, who works for ABC as a college football analyst, predicts big things for Day’s offensive unit regardless of who wins the job.

“I don’t think they even know; I really don’t,” Herbstreit told On3 Sports. “I think you got two guys that are more than capable. Ohio State’s been pretty spoiled at that spot since Ryan Day has taken over. They’re going to find a way to put a lot of points on the board regardless of which guy wins it.”

However, Kirk Herbstreit predicted that Day and Ohio State might take a page out of the playbook of rival Jim Harbaugh in letting the quarterback competition bleed into the season.

“I think he’ll go into summer camp, they’ll have those scrimmages, and then I wouldn’t be shocked if they used the first two or three games to kind of let these guys maybe play it out,” Herbstreit said.

“It’s hard to make a big decision like that from a scrimmage in the summer. It’s only fair. Like what Jim Harbaugh did last year. Give a guy a half or a game; give the other guy the same thing.”

Buckeye fans won’t mind Day cribbing Harbaugh if it leads to success this season.
