Following Illinois’ nine-overtime road win over No. 7 Penn State, Saturday’s second victory from an unranked team against a top-10 team came in Ames, Iowa. There, the Iowa State Cyclones pulled off a 24-21 win against the No. 8 Oklahoma State Cowboys, outscoring them 17-7 in the second half. And that win came thanks in part to a key defensive stop on a Oklahoma State fourth-and-two attempt inside the final two minutes, and to a somewhat controversial spot:
Where the ball was spotted wound up being exceptionally close, but short, as the measurement showed:
The spot can certainly be debated, but the review didn’t overturn it. And that led to an Iowa State win, and to a field-storming:
The unranked Cyclones, 4-2 going into this game, were 7.5 point favorites against the No. 8 6-0 Cowboys, so this outcome wasn’t unexpected by many even given the disparate AP poll rankings. But this was still a huge win for Iowa State, and one that may add some further Big 12 chaos.
