Houston Cougars guard Rob Gray was suspended for tonight’s season opener for a bizarre reason. The senior apparently played in a church league rec game over the offseason, and that’s apparently against NCAA rules, so he was suspended one game for it.
Yes, really:
This is a bit ridiculous, especially when you consider all of the scandals and shady happenings in the college basketball world these days (you know, actually important stuff and not a harmless church league rec game).
Gray averaged 20.6 points per game for Houston last season (and was the AAC leading scorer), and went off in an exhibition win for Houston against Baylor in October.
The good news for Houston is they still went on to win 81-53 over McNeese State without Gray on Friday night.
