Deion Sanders is one of the most prolific athletes in sports history for a reason. He has always done things his own way.
That was no exception at Jackson State, and it will be the same during his first year as coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Recently, Sanders told his team that he’s looking for gritty guys—guys willing to fight if it comes down to that.
“See, you all want to be the man until it’s time to be the man because the man, sooner or later, is going to have to prove he can fight,” Sanders told his team. “And, you’re going to have your back up against the wall, sooner or later, and you have to come out fighting, and I want to make sure you have that in you. Because I never want to go into a bar, a club, into a situation where I’ve got somebody with me and he don’t want to fight.
“See, you all want the perks and accolades that accompany the man but not the work and consistency that he must put in consistently to be who he is. Today is going to be a day just like yesterday. So, you have to make up in your mind if you’re going to fight.”
It will be interesting to see if Sanders’ team reflects that attitude on the field this fall.
