Former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn has not been shy about his thoughts on the Notre Dame coaching situation since Brian Kelly left for LSU.
“What would entice you to go to LSU?,” Quinn asked when the news first broke, referring to LSU as “desperate” in an attempt to throw money at getting a high-profile name candidate after Lincoln Riley turned them down. He would later go on to call Kelly “classless” for the way he left the program and players.
Quinn also talked about how his top picks to replace Kelly were Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell. However, the Irish kept things in-house and elevated defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman as their new head coach instead. Freeman was receiving a lot of hype from many in the college football world before the decision was made.
Now, Quinn says he’s on board with the pick, and he was even on-hand to emcee Freeman’s introductory event. In a recent chat on Fox Sports Radio, Quinn explained why he thinks Freeman is such a good pick.
“The University knew what they had in Marcus and they were like, ‘This is the best guy for our situation and for right now,’ said Quinn. “He’s just genuine. He connects with players. Yeah, he’s a great recruiter but he’s a great coach too. I mean you can see the way that defense developed and got better over the course of the year and that had a lot to do with just the way he connects with those young men. So, there’s a lot of excitement, and rightfully so because of everything he brings.”
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see how Notre Dame performs on the field to see what everyone truly thinks of Freeman as head coach. Clearly, Brady Quinn won’t be shy about sharing his opinion on the matter, one way or another.
