The Wake Forest Demon Deacons came into Wednesday’s ACC tournament game with the Boston College Eagles in a good position to potentially make a deep run in that conference tournament and solidify their position as a clear NCAA tournament team.
Boston College had other plans, stunning the Demon Deacons 82-77 in overtime in a huge upset. And that puts Wake Forest’s NCAA tournament future in question going forward.
This loss has gotten many believing that the Demon Deacons could be on the outside looking in for a NCAA tournament spot. Their fate could depend on what else happens in this week’s conference tournaments.
This marks the second Quad-3 loss for Wake Forest, with their other loss coming against Louisville earlier this season. That’s a metric that certainly weighs heavy on the mind of the NCAA Selection Committee.
College basketball insider Jerry Palm of CBS Sports had Wake Forest as a clear bubble team before this game against Boston College, and had this to say on Wake Forest’s future if they lost Wednesday’s game.
“This is an elimination game for the Demon Deacons. This would be a second Quad 3 loss – one too many for a resume as soft as Wake Forest’s. The goal is to get them to tomorrow.”
While it is far from official that we won’t be seeing Wake Forest in the NCAA tournament, and there have been some unusual selections in prior years, the Demon Deacons’ tournament hopes were certainly dealt a huge blow on Wednesday at the hands of Boston College.
