Just as many people had figured, it will be an all-SEC national title game once again as the Alabama Crimson Tide will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff National Title Game on January 10, 2022, in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
While there were high hopes that the Cincinnati Bearcats could shock the world, Alabama came out strong and never let up, cruising to a 27-6 victory. Meanwhile, Georgia looked every bit the No. 1 team in the nation that they were most of the year in their 34-11 thrashing of the Michigan Wolverines.
Not only will the title be decided between two SEC teams, but it will be two teams who played each other less than a month ago. Alabama defeated then-unbeaten Georgia for the SEC title in early December. At the time, many people said we’d probably see them play once more in the playoff, and they were right.
No matter who wins, it means that the SEC will be guaranteed its third straight national title and 12th champion in 16 years. Alabama has won seven of those titles since 2009, having defeated Georgia in the 2018 title game.
College football fans love traditions but this is one of those traditions that many of them are getting rather tired of, even if the Nick Saban-led Bama dynasty is impressive as anything in American sports. They certainly made their feelings known on social media after the day’s outcomes.
On one hand, we all love to see fresh faces get a chance to win the championship. On the other hand, it’s not like the other teams that usually make the playoff are all that diverse either. Credit due to Alabama, Georgia, and the SEC for doing what we expect them to do. And it’s on everyone else to up their game and try to knock them out.
