They say age is just a number, and in the case of Joe Thomas Sr., that would certainly seem to be true.
Thomas had a three-yard carry at running back for South Carolina State on Saturday against Savannah State, and that makes the 55-year-old Thomas — what is believed to be — the oldest D-I football player to ever take the field. Thomas has participated in practice for the Bulldogs over the last four seasons.

His son Joe Thomas Jr., plays linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. Before Thomas Jr. signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2014, the two were enrolled at South Carolina State at the same time. Thomas Sr. even joined his son on the football field, but of course didn’t get any game action until Saturday.
Although it was only a three-yard carry on his one play of the day, it might as well have been 100 yards. This is one of the special moments in football and could one day be a movie. Sports allows for an unwavering sense of community and Thomas Sr. is one of the inspiring stories you hope to see in the news.
