Dan Wolken of the USA Today reports that freshman quarterback Justin Fields intends to transfer from the University of Georgia.
Highly touted quarterback Justin Fields has notified Georgia he intends to transfer, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school has not yet acknowledged the transfer.
Fields was the No. 1 recruit in the country according to the ESPN 300 in 2018, and the No. 2 overall recruit according to Rivals. We’re talking an elite prospect.
But the 6’3″, 225-pounder has been behind Jake Fromm on the Georgia depth chart, and Fromm is only a sophomore. Fields has thrown just 39 passes on the season, completing 27 of those for four touchdowns and zero interceptions. It seems clear that Fields hasn’t been happy about his role and how that looks going forward.
Wolken also believes that Fields could have a case for being eligible to play in 2019 if he transfers.
In October, Georgia baseball player Adam Sasser allegedly used a racial slur toward Fields during a Georgia football game against Tennessee. Sasser was kicked off the team.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach also reports that Fields is considering transferring, but intends to remain with the Bulldogs for the Sugar Bowl against Texas (New Year’s Day).
Schlabach adds that Fields “might consider Florida State, Ohio State and Oklahoma if he decides to leave.”
