Steve Kerr will have at least two more seasons to work his magic for the Golden State Warriors.
ESPN reported Friday night that the Warriors have signed the four-time NBA champion coach to a two-year, $35 million contract extension that runs through the 2025-26 season.
Kerr becomes the highest paid coach in NBA history (San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich makes more per season, but also handles the role of team president).
The Warriors find themselves in unfamiliar territory this season, entering Friday 28-26 and 10th in the Western Conference. Draymond Green’s antics have been a distraction, as has the drama surrounding Klay Thompson’s role. Those struggles have led many Warriors fans to call for a coaching change, if not midseason, certainly when Kerr’s contract expired at season’s end.
As it turns out, Kerr, who collected his 500th career coaching victory last week, isn’t going anywhere.
The NBA world and Warriors fans had mixed thoughts on the issue.
Y’all really thought Joe was gonna let this guy go? Whether you like it or not…Steph, Klay, and Draymond love Kerr and will go to bat for him any day & everyday! But this 2 year extension essentially aligns his tenure with the Big 3’s remaining years. I’m not mad at this
I know we’re unhappy with him at times, but I can’t imagine anyone else coming in and doing better or the guys wanting someone else. What we need is a new Defensive Coordinator imo https://t.co/o5wXKm6Yyf
