The San Antonio Spurs have a rich history in the NBA, winning five championships since 1999. San Antonio selected Victor Wembanyama No. 1 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft with hopes that he’ll add to that number. And he already has the support of the men who helped win those earlier titles.
A day after being drafted by the Spurs, Wembanyama had dinner with David Robinson, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan.
He shared that the three San Antonio legends imparted their wisdom to him and made him feel at home.
“You know, in probably a couple of hours, I learned more about the NBA than my whole life,” Wembanyama said. “It’s such [a] comfort to see these people who are so important to the city of San Antonio and to the franchise are such kind people and generous because they genuinely wanted to share with me their experience. And I feel like they’ve already started to take great care of me. And it’s just so comforting to be in that position.”
Wembanyama also shared a photo of himself with Robinson, Duncan, Ginobili and Sean Elliott with the caption, “Couldn’t ask for better role models.”
The Spurs that Wembanyama will join bear almost no resemblance to the teams that Robinson, Elliott, Duncan and Ginobili played on — with one notable exception. The head coach is still Gregg Popovich. Nobody would be more qualified to tell Wembanyama what to expect from the legendary coach than those players.
