How does Steph Curry feel about the breaking up of the Splash Brothers? It’s going to take some getting used to.
Curry is preparing to be part of Team USA in this summer’s Paris Olympics. On Team USA, Curry will be a teammate of LeBron James, one of his last main rivals for the last decade in the NBA. During all of the battles he’s led the Golden State Warriors into against LeBron’s teams (and others), Klay Thompson, Curry’s fellow Splash Brother, has been by his side.
With Thompson now on the Dallas Mavericks, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports asked Curry a big question: “What’s going to be more awkward? Having LeBron as a teammate for an extended period of time? Or not having Klay Thompson as a teammate?”
“Not having Klay, man, it still really hasn’t sunk in,” Curry said. “Just because you’ve been doing it for 13 years together. And, you know, coach made a joke, he’s like ‘Sometimes you can’t really find Klay in the offseason, you don’t really hear from him as much — and then he shows up at training camp ready to go.’ I kind of have this idea that in October, he’ll still be like, ‘Hey guys, what’s up?’ But I know that’s not happening. So that’ll sink in a little bit once training camp starts.”
Thompson’s departure from Golden State marked the end of a special era. From 2015-2022, the Warriors won four NBA championships and six Western Conference championships. The Splash Brothers were the team’s most consistent offensive forces. Make no mistake, players like Draymond Green and Kevin Durant were integral. But Green did more to give the team its defensive identity and as prolific as Durant was in Golden State, the Warriors won both before his arrival and after his departure.
Much like no Warrior will ever wear No. 30 after Curry leaves, the permanent reservation of Thompson’s No. 11 will be one of the honors he will rightly receive.
But in the more immediate future, we can only imagine that not having Thompson there will continue to feel weird for Curry.
And even some of that awkwardness fades through training camp, expect it to reappear the first time Curry and Thompson are sharing the court — but in different uniforms.
