Miami Heat guard Jimmy Butler debuted a new look Monday at the franchise’s annual media day ahead of the 2022-2023 season. Sporting shoulder-length dreadlocks, Butler revealed his hilarious reason for the hairdo and if he plans to keep the long hair into the season.
“I’m not wearing any extensions. I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Butler joked. “I don’t know, it’s still up for debate if I’m going to keep my hair like this or not. They’re not extensions. So, who knows? I’m going to try out a lot of new looks. My baby-face assassin look—kind of cute, isn’t it? I don’t really know. I haven’t thought about it. I’m just messing with stuff to make the internet mad.
“That was my goal this summer, and it worked.”
The NBA world was quick to react to Butler’s decision with mostly negative views:

Initially the 30th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Butler played with for other franchises before coming to the Heat in a sign-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Butler has traditionally worn his hair closely cropped to his scalp throughout his playing career.
The Miami Heat tip off their preseason next Tuesday when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.
