The New York Knicks made the shocking move to move on from head coach Tom Thibodeau, despite Thibodeau leading the franchise to a surprise Eastern Conference Finals appearance, where they ultimately fell to the Indiana Pacers in six games.
However, the Knicks don’t seem to have much of a succession plan for Thibodeau in place, and had to resort to requesting (and being denied) to interview the sitting head coaches of other teams around the league.
Now, one shocking name is emerging as a strong candidate to replace Thibodeau, according to one prominent league insider.
“Mike Brown will have a second meeting with the New York Knicks for their head coaching job and has emerged as a strong candidate, sources tell ESPN,” reported Shams Charania on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“The revolving door of these NBA coaches is absurd. It’s the same guys over and over and over. If you get a foot in the door, you can have a half dozen head jobs before finally being axed for good. But even then, a career as an assistant remains on the table,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Is this not a lateral move from Thibs? Knicks sitting here on June 30 with no head coach and their plan is to move to a more likable version of Thibs?” someone else added.
“So we got rid of Thibs, a defensive minded coach to bring in Mike Brown, a defensive minded coach. Lol, why did Leon Rose trade for KAT? We’re not gonna win with him if we keep KAT,” one Knicks fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the coaching search unfolds for New York.
