The New York Knicks find themselves in NBA purgatory of being good enough to likely make the postseason each year, but not quite good enough to be a title contender.
However, one NBA insider listed a potential trade target for the Knicks that could drastically help their chances of competing in the upcoming 2023-24 season.
The Milwaukee Bucks shook up the NBA world earlier this week by acquiring star point guard Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers.
In return, they sent Jrue Holiday to Portland, where he will likely be available in another trade as the Trail Blazers head toward a full-on rebuild.
Holiday, one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, played a huge role in the Bucks’ NBA title run in the 2020-21 season. And that will likely make him a very sought-after player for many contenders around the NBA.
It looks like the Knicks could be leading that group of interested teams in potentially trading for Holiday. According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Knicks along with the Los Angeles Clippers are “among a presumably large group of teams” with known interest in Holiday.
New York is coming off their best season in recent memory. Their 47-35 regular season record last year is their best since the 2012-13 season for the Knicks.
There is a real argument that this is the time to make a big move for the Knicks. They have a number of young players like that could potentially be trade pieces to get this move done.
However, it is also worth asking whether Holiday, a 33-year-old guard with 14-years of NBA experience under his belt, really moves the needle for a team like the Knicks to become a true contender in the Eastern Conference.
