Boston sports fans are some of the most polarizing across the sports world. They’ve been called out by players who’ve had unfortunate experiences in Beantown, as well as athletes, like Jaylen Brown, who call the city of Boston home. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the outspoken NBA All-Star called out a portion of the Celtics fanbase, which he believes to be “extremely toxic.”
Brown isn’t the first player to call out Boston sports fans for their antics and behavior and he certainly won’t be the last one. Though, it’s certainly notable that he’s sending a clear message to the fanbase, as the Celtics look to return to the NBA Finals later this summer.
His comments were pretty pointed, as he took issue with those who don’t believe that he should have or use his platform.
“It’s not the whole Celtic fan base, but it is a part of the fanbase that exists within the Celtic nation that is problematic,” said Brown. “If you have a bad game, they tie it to your personal character. I definitely think there’s a group or an amount within that is extremely toxic and does not want to see athletes use their platform or they just want you to play basketball and entertain and go home. And that’s a problem to me.”
We’ll have to see how the Celtics fanbase ultimately responds to these comments made by Brown.
