If the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers meet in the playoffs, NBA fans have to hope that the games in that series are as good as the classic the two teams had on Saturday night.
The Celtics trailed by 13 in the third quarter, but chipped away at Philadelphia’s lead and actually took an 80-78 lead into the fourth quarter. That set the stage for an epic finish.
Joel Embiid hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 10.1 seconds remaining. Boston responded with an inbounds play to Marcus Smart, who quickly dished the ball to Jayson Tatum. Tatum looked to be driving to the basket but pulled up at the three-point line. While he was still being defended, he got a clean look at the hoop and took advantage, nailing the go-ahead three.
Some players on the floor initially reacted as though either the game was over or they were expecting a time out. But 1.3 seconds remained and Philadelphia didn’t ave a time out. Quickly realizing that, P.J. Tucker inbounded the ball to Embiid, who, caught the ball facing Tucker, dribbled, turned around and took a shot from the opposite free throw line. Stunningly, the shot went in.
The 76ers fans went crazy but the officials quickly ruled that Embiid did not get the shot off in time. Embiid’s reaction indicated that he agreed with the ruling. Upon further review, it was confirmed. Embiid’s shot did not count.
Basketball fans went crazy for the finish. Tatum, the Celtics and Embiid all received a lot of praise — and rightfully so.
