The United States Olympic basketball roster has been finalized.
After much uncertainty regarding the last few spots for Team USA, the final two positions have been filled. First, The Vertical reported Golden State Warriors forward Harrison Barnes accepted a roster invitation, and will be heading to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
In addition, Marc Stein reported that Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving accepted an invitation, rounding out the team.
Irving, who played a very large role in the Cavs championship run, has shined for Team USA in international play in the past, leading the team to gold in the 2014 FIBA World Cup while earning MVP honors. With guards like Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Chris Paul not participating, there was uncertainty as to whether Irving would choose to play this time around, especially with the quick turnaround from the Finals.
On the other hand, Barnes is one of the more intriguing selections on the roster. Joining teammates Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on Team USA, he’s coming off of a poor showing in the NBA Finals, especially from the floor (35.2 percent shooting.) But the withdrawal of forwards like Lebron James and Kawhi Leonard created an opening at the position. As a restricted free agent, Barnes will also be looking to prove his value on the international stage.
Despite the withdrawal of several key superstars, Team USA remains a solid favorite to take home the gold. Here’s the breakdown of the roster heading into Rio:
Guards: Kyrie Irving (Cavs), Kyle Lowry (Raptors), Jimmy Butler (Bulls), DeMar DeRozan (Raptors), Klay Thompson (Warriors)
Forwards: Carmelo Anthony (Knicks), Harrison Barnes (Warriors; Restricted Free Agent), Kevin Durant (Thunder; Unrestricted Free Agent), Paul George (Pacers), Draymond Green (Warriors)
Centers: DeMarcus Cousins (Kings), DeAndre Jordan (Clippers)
