After becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards has emerged as a legitimate star in the league. But this weekend, he went viral for all the wrong reasons when he posted a video making homophobic remarks.
Edwards shared the controversial video to his Instagram story over the weekend. In the video, Edwards is in a car looking at a group of shirtless men gathered on the sidewalk across the street. Some of the shirtless men appear to be hugging.
Edwards apparently had a problem with either their affection towards each other or their attire, as he made some quite homophobic and not safe for work comments.
“Look at these queer a** n****s, man,” Edwards said in the video. “Look what the world done came to.”
The video went viral and Edwards faced plenty of backlash, leading the Minnesota shooting guard to delete the video from his Instagram story and issue an apology on Twitter.
“What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry. It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!” Edwards said in his Tweet.
While some accepted his apology, many people weren’t buying it.
I appreciate Anthony Edwards' approach to this apology. He didn't do the usual "I'm sorry if you were offended" BS.
Now, I'm curious if he'll go further and partner with LGBTQ groups to educate himself and others on the insidiousness of homophobia. https://t.co/DX0nDYLxIL

Well, obviously he wasn’t or he wouldn’t have said it.
This just bums me out. https://t.co/kw1Be4yB4e
