The New York Yankees announced a major re-resigning on Monday, though, it was not the one that most Yankees fans were hoping to hear about.
While the team attempts to re-sign megastar Aaron Judge, the Major League Baseball franchise announced that it had officially re-signed Brian Cashman to a four-year contract through 2026 to continue serving as Senior Vice President and General Manager.
“I’ve been working for this franchise for a long time,” Cashman said on Nov. 4. “I’m honored to be a part of the Yankee family.”
The 55-year-old certainly has a lot of accolades during his time with the Yankees, having racked up 14 division titles, six American League pennants, and four World Series titles since becoming GM 25 years ago.
That said, the timing of the announcement could have been better. The news comes on the same day that NL batting champ Trea Turner signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and American League Cy Young winner Justin Verlander signed with the cross-town New York Mets.
With all eyes on whether or not the Yankees can make an offer that keeps Judge in pinstripes, the news that Cashman’s deal got done didn’t exactly inspire a lot of excitement amongst Yankee fans. Cashman and the Yankees offered Judge $213.5 million over seven years in the spring, which he declined. Now, they’ve reportedly offered eight years and almost $300 million, though that might not be enough as other suitors are lining up as well.
While we wait to see if Cashman can earn his new contract, plenty of people around the MLB world had some thoughts on the announcement.
Who needs Verlander and Trea Turner when you could have Brian Cashman? https://t.co/rNquJsk8w3

You could hear the groan of the Yankees' social media team being asked to post this (on today of all days) all the way in Manhattan. https://t.co/8o9Spjqh4w

Brilliant Yankees news dump on the same day Justin Verlander agrees to a deal with the Mets. https://t.co/hpzA2guwHA
