Yoan Moncada and Willy Garcia of the Chicago White Sox were in an awful collision in right field during the team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Moncada — playing second base — and Garcia — playing right field — were both going after a shallow flyball when Moncada’s knee nailed Garcia in the head, as Garcia was attempting to make a sliding catch. Both players were down on the field for a while, and Moncada had to be carted off with a knee injury.
Here’s video of the scary scene:
You naturally fear a concussion for Garcia after seeing that, and of course a serious knee injury for Moncada after he had to be carted off.
However, the White Sox have just released statements that sure seem like best-case scenarios — so far — for the players.
Moncada is being called “day-to-day” with a right knee contusion, and x-rays were negative.
Garcia has been diagnosed with a head contusion:
In Moncada’s case, it’s possible there’s still an MRI coming, but you’d think the team wouldn’t call him “day-to-day” if they were truly concerned about a serious knee injury.
The White Sox certainly hope Moncada is okay, as the 22-year-old is baseball’s consensus top prospect. Chicago — in the middle of a full-on rebuild — called Moncada up to the big leagues two weeks ago, after acquiring him from the Boston Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade over the winter. While Moncada is having a difficult time with MLB pitching so far at the dish, he’s definitely shown off his talents defensively:
