In the bottom of the third inning, the Cubs appeared to be in some trouble. The Indians had just scored a run and threatened several more, and Game 7 of the World Series was tied 1-1.
But in the top of the fourth, Kris Bryant singled, advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a fielder’s choice.
That led to this shallow fly ball, off the bat of Addison Russell.
What a send by Cubs’ third-base coach Gary Jones. With a good throw from Rajai Davis, Bryant would have been out and Jones would have looked like an idiot.
Instead, Bryant beat the throw and the Cubs took a 2-1 edge.
Chicago expanded its lead the very next batter, when Willson Contreras hit a line drive to center field that was slightly misplaced by Davis.
Javy Baez led off the fifth inning with a home run to right-center, giving the Cubs a 4-1 lead.
This one is far from over, but let’s just say Cubs fans are starting to count down the outs.
