After a couple months on the job, President Donald Trump is reportedly going to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day as the Florida Marlins take on the Washington Nationals next Monday.
While the White House didn’t comment on Politico‘s report, considering that it takes a lot of planning to bring a U.S. President to a baseball stadium, it’s likely to happen. Trump would also reportedly sit in for an inning on MASN’s Nationals broadcast.
This is surely going to be seen as a controversial move given the current political climate but it shouldn’t be a surprising move. Every U.S. President except for Jimmy Carter has thrown out the first pitch of a baseball game since William Howard Taft started the tradition of throwing a ceremonial first pitch in 1910.
Despite the tradition of the ceremonial first pitch by a President, not everyone is willing to invite President Trump to the ballpark. Baltimore Orioles Executive VP John Angelos has said Trump won’t be throwing the first pitch at Camden Yards until he apologizes for making various controversial remarks.
It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of a reaction Trump gets at Nationals Park. Will the crowd show its displeasure for the Republican in the Democrat heavy Washington D.C.? Will the crowd put off politics for a couple hours and reluctantly cheer Trump since it’s Opening Day? I guess we’ll find out if it happens Monday.
UPDATE: It appears that due to a scheduling conflict, Trump isn’t throwing out the first pitch.
