Things had not gone well for Trevor Story throughout the early weeks of his tenure with the Boston Red Sox. That changed in one game.
Entering Thursday’s game against the Seattle Mariners, Story was hitting .205/.293/.320 with two home runs. And while a two-time All-Star starting slow isn’t normally much cause for panic, when the All-Star in question is playing home games away from Coors Field for the first time in his career, there’s some cause for concern. Story did a lot to quiet that concern on Thursday.
His first four plate appearances resulted in two home runs, a single, a stolen base, a walk, and four runs scored. So, things were already going well for Story when he strolled to the plate in the eighth inning for the fifth time in the game. Then, they got even better.
The call from Seattle’s announcers was less excited.

Story’s game puts him in one club whose membership can be counted on one hand and another whose membership can be counted with one finger.
That was not all he did. Story entered the game with a .613 OPS. Now, it sits at .730. His overall slash line now sits at .230/.317/.413. While those aren’t great stats, they’re not terrible for a month into the season, especially since offensive numbers are generally down across the board.
Story’s slow start to the season generated a lot of buzz in the MLB world. This performance did, too, though the tone of the buzz was decidedly different.
Story now has five home runs on the season with 23 RBI. Those totals are the second-highest and highest totals on the Red Sox, respectively. He’s also scored 19 runs, which is the third-best total on the team.
Or, to put it another way, in one game, Story went from being one of the most disappointing players on Boston’s team to one of its most productive.
