The Philadelphia Phillies entered the eighth inning of Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals tied 3-3. By the time the visiting Phillies were retired in the top of the eighth inning, the scoreboard looked a lot different.
Trea Turner had a lot to do with that.
Turner led the inning off for Philadelphia and put his team ahead, drilling a 2-0 pitcher from Cory Abbott into the seats.
That seemed to give a jolt to the rest of his teammates, as Philadelphia batted around from there. A lot changed between Turner’s first and second at-bats of the inning. When Turner came up again, the Phillies had a safe 10-3 lead.
But while a lot had changed, two things were the same. One, Abbott was still on the mound for the Nationals. Two, like he did to start the inning, Turner drilled an Abbott offering into the seats for a home run.
The two-home run inning didn’t go unnoticed by baseball fans.
Performances like this are helping Turner turn around what was largely a disappointing season for him. Turner’s strong August has not only helped salvage his own season, but it’s been a big help for the team. There are six teams realistically vying for the three Wild Card spots in the National League. His strong August has helped the Phillies climb to the top of that race.
