Wednesday has produced incredible moments of baseballs getting stuck, unlike any day we’ve ever seen. And they each happened in Triple-A games in the minor leagues.
Earlier in the evening, there was a batted ball that plopped firmly into the ground in a game between Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers affiliate) and Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Guardians affiliate).
While that ball landed inches from home plate, a ball that got stuck in another Triple-A game was crushed- and literally destroyed part of an outfield wall at Buffalo’s Sahlen Field.
Toronto Blue Jays super prospect Gabriel Moreno hit a 111 mph line drive that got stuck in the wall in the Buffalo Bisons’ game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies affiliate) on Wednesday night.
This may be the most bizarre ground-rule double you’ll ever see:
Moreno is the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball per FanGraphs (who gives him a 60 Future Value scouting grade), and No. 7 per MLB Pipeline.
The 22-year-old catcher has played in 18 games for Toronto this season, but the Blue Jays are loaded at catcher with Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen in place with the big-league club. So, Moreno is currently in Triple-A with the chance to get daily playing time and continue his development.
But Moreno showed on Wednesday night what he’s capable of as a hitter, and he’ll surely get his chance back in the bigs again soon.
