Another day that Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani each homered. Another day that the Los Angeles Angels lost.
The Angels fell 5-4 to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon, after the Tigers hit back-to-back homers in the top of the ninth inning.
Ohtani and Trout having big games, only for the Angels (now 60-77) to lose, has been an all too frequent occurrence in Anaheim. It’s led to many baseball fans making the same joke, as inspired by a 2021 tweet from Matt English.
English tweeted, “every time I see an Angels highlight it’s like ‘Mike Trout hit three home runs and raised his average to .528 while Shohei Ohtani did something that hasn’t been done since ‘Tungsten Arm’ O’Doyle of the 1921 Akron Groomsmen, as the Tigers defeated the Angels 8-3.”
That tweet is constantly referenced when Ohtani and Trout do great things in Angels losses, and even a team with the second-worst record in the American League is piling on.
After Wednesday’s win, the Tigers tweeted “Tungsten Arm O’Doyle would be proud” above a graphic of the final score.
Getting burned by a 52-80 team’s Twitter account is rough.
Now, do the Tigers — an extremely disappointing team as well, after a high-spending offseason — have much room to talk? Not really.
But hey, it’s funny.
