The Philadelphia Phillies made a huge move in free agency on Monday.
As one MLB insider suggested they would, the Phillies made a move on superstar shortstop Trea Turner. The National League Champions signed Turner to a huge mega-deal that will keep him in Philadelphia until 2033.
ESPN insider Jeff Passan first reported on Turner’s signing with the Phillies. Passan tweeted, “BREAKING: Shortstop Trea Turner and the Philadelphia Phillies are in agreement on a contract, a source tells ESPN.”
Fellow ESPN baseball writer Kiley McDaniel added further details on the terms of the deal. He tweeted, “Turner is getting 11 years, $300 million with a full no-trade clause.”
That’s a whopper of a deal for Turner. The years certainly shorten the AAV. But, Turner will make over $27 million anyway with this deal. The full no-trade clause is also a major coup for the prized shortstop. So MLB fans and the world alike will get used to Turner in Phillies red, white, and (sometimes powder) blue.
With the move, Turner will be teammates again with two-time NL MVP Bryce Harper. He’s also back in the NL East, a division he attacked well while he was on the Washington Nationals.
Turner is the second superstar player to agree to terms on Monday. Former multi-time Cy Young and two-time World Series Champion Justin Verlander signed with the New York Mets earlier in the day.
The MLB world is abuzz over Turner’s signing.
You, thinking about the last 3 years of Trea Turner's contract: nooo, he's a speed-based player and he's going to be old!!!!!
Me, thinking about the Phillies offense next year: haha, lineup go brrrr
