Tuesday’s matchup between the San Diego Padres and the Miami Marlins was a complete effort by the Padres pitching staff, capped off fittingly by a dominant relief appearance from Jeremiah Estrada, who is quickly turning into a household name this season.
Padres starter Matt Waldron got things started off on the right foot, hurling seven innings of scoreless pitching from the bump to put the Padres bullpen into an ideal situation.
Wandy Peralta then came into the game in the eighth inning, again holding the Marlins to no runs in his lone inning on the mound.
Estrada then came in to pitch the ninth inning with a 4-0 lead. And if you know anything about Estrada’s 2024 season thus far, you would know that the Marlins had little to no chance of coming back in this game.
Coming into the game, Estrada had allowed just three hits and one earned run off a solo home run in 10 innings of work. He also had a remarkable streak of consecutive strikeouts on the line, with ten consecutive strikeouts in his last ten batters, which dates all the way back to last Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.
As you may expect, Estrada’s streak continued in emphatic fashion, striking out every batter he faced in a flawless ninth inning to secure the 4-0 victory for the Padres.
A video on X, formerly known as Twitter, of Estrada’s 13 consecutive strikeouts surfaced shortly after the end result, showing how he is simply overpowering batters at the moment.
The streak is a significant one, as it is the longest of its sort since 1961, according to MLB’s Sarah Langs.
Padres fans in attendance clearly knew they were watching something special when Estrada struck out the final batter of the game, giving him a big round of applause as he walked into the dugout.
Fans at home also took notice of Estrada’s notable accomplishment, taking to social media to sing his praises.
It will sure be interesting to see when Estrada gets his next opportunity out of the bullpen for the Padres, as he will look to further add to this incredibly impressive streak.
