There are some bad ways to lose a baseball game and then there’s this.
The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres were tied 6-6 in the bottom of the 10th inning. With runners on the corners, closer Santiago Casilla was looking to close out the inning and get the Giants a chance to take the lead. Instead, Casilla tripped on the windup, threw the ball and committed a balk, allowing the Padres to score the winning run without really having to do anything.
In the vast history of Major League Baseball, Harvard Sports Analysis report that it’s only the 20th walk-off balk in MLB history. The Dodgers beat the Rangers 1-0 on a walk-off balk last year, the most recent walk-off balk in Major League Baseball.
Certainly an unexpected way to beat the NL West leaders.
