Thursday’s game between the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies provided a nice moment in the stands, thanks largely to the son of Philadelphia outfielder, Nick Castellanos.
A foul ball was hit into the stands and gathered in by a man. Rather than keep the ball, the man wanted to give the ball to a young kid. This particular kid, though, was Liam Castellanos, Nick’s son. The younger Castellanos didn’t want the ball. Immediately after taking the ball, he handed the ball off to another kid sitting in the area.
First of all, our hat is off to the man who tried to find a kid to give the ball to immediately after securing it. This is something that pretty much anyone over the age of about 16 should do. There are exceptions, like if the ball was hit by a relative or if it’s a potentially valuable ball commemorating a milestone or record-breaking home run. But with those select exceptions, the ball will mean a lot more to a younger fan than an adult.
Second, Liam did a great job here. We can only guess that he has all kinds of MLB memorabilia from not only his dad, but also his dad’s teammates and opponents over the years. Liam is still of the age where getting a foul ball would be a genuinely cool experience and we wouldn’t have blamed him if he held on to it. But he made sure that the ball found a good home. And the young fan who did end up with the ball seemed to be quite thrilled with it.
