One of the top MLB free agents remaining is star shortstop Carlos Correa, who appears to have a number of teams interested in him such as his latest team in the Minnesota Twins and also the San Francisco Giants. It appears that there may be one more contender in the mix to land Correa after a significant report emerged on Tuesday.
According to Ken Rosenthal, Dan Hayes, and Andy McCullough of The Athletic, the New York Mets are showing interest in Correa “according to sources familiar with the team’s thinking.”
If the Mets were to target Correa, it would cap off what has already been a very busy free agency for New York, already signing Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, and re-signing Brandon Nimmo.
It would also bring together two teammates on the Puerto Rican National Team in Carlos Correa and Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor.
While this possibility seems intriguing, there are some that are certainly skeptical of how realistic the move is for New York.
“I’d say there’s some smoke,” one Mets person told The Athletic. “I’m not sure how big the fire is, though.”
It also wouldn’t be the most ideal fit. While Lindor and Correa would likely love to play together, one of them would ultimately need to shift from their primary shortstop position if they were to play together, which takes away from their excellent defensive skills individually.
It’s unclear just how interested New York is at this point. The fact that they are even being mentioned as a possibility after all the signings they have already made proves that Mets owner Steve Cohen is going all out to put together a championship-caliber team for the upcoming MLB season.
