Pete Alonso had to go. And he had to go bad.
During the first couple of innings of a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Red on May 10, the New York Mets superstar slugger had to use the restroom. During a recent episode of ‘Foul Territory,’ Alonso revealed that he had a pregame coffee a little too close to first pitch. And he untimely paid the price.
“I mistimed my pregame coffee. Mistimed it. I had it too close to game time,” Alonso said, via the New York Post. “And then I’m running, doing my sprints and then I throw in the middle of the first inning, I’m like goodness gracious, this is not good.
“So I was hitting the top of the second, I was leading off the inning. I said I don’t care where this pitch is, this at-bat is ending first pitch. Because I need to go.”
Fourtuanley for Alonso and the Mets, swinging at the first pitch proved to be fortuitous. Alonso deposited a first-pitch slider from Hunter Greene into the left field bleachers at Great American Ballpark. Alonso’s home run, which tied the game at one apiece, had an exit velocity of 104.7 mph. So, both he and the ball got out in a hurry.
After Alonso touched home plate, he made a mad dash for the bathroom. No high-fives. Nothing.
“That was best case [scenario]. But, honestly, I would’ve gotten picked off on purpose or something,” Alonso said. “Because I had to go so bad.”
And naturally, those in the MLB world had a field day with Alonso’s all-too-relatable story on social media:
