The New York Mets became the subject of hilarity again on Monday. Though, this time, it was for something very innocuous but humorous.
As the Mets deal with a lowly 5-15 run that’s put them 15 games back of first-place Atlanta, the Citi Field scoreboard operators made an oopsie. The scoreboard in right field featured a 2023 MLB Opening Day graphic.
Unfortunately for Met fans, it’s June 26. It is assuredly not MLB Opening Day.
Laura Albanese of Newsday tweeted, “The smaller scoreboard at Citi currently trying to will a do-over into existence.”
While Met fans might want a mulligan, they are unfortunately in the bed that they’ve made themselves this season. Their big signings haven’t panned out the way they wanted to thus far this year, and they’ve struggled to keep runs off the board. The Mets have allowed 366 runs this season, the second-most in the National League East Division to last-place Washington. They’re also just 17-15 at home at Citi Field this year with a dismal 18-27 record on the road.
Many laughed and joked on the hilarious oopsie.
“Lolol, I wish,” Matt Musico, a Met fan, tweeted.
“We have to go back, Kate. We have to go back!” wrote Amazin’ Avenue writer Vas Drimalitis.
“Opening Day 2.0 2023, sounds like a plan!” wrote another Met fan.
“We all want this but they came out and said it,” another Met fan said.
