The New York Mets made waves on Thursday night, as the team signed a key free agent back.
Outfielder Brandon Nimmo elected to stay in Flushing. Nimmo and the Mets agreed to terms on a long-term contract Thursday night. The deal is for eight years and $162 million and will keep him until his age 37 season.
Jeff Passan detailed the deal on Thursday evening. He tweeted, “Outfielder Brandon Nimmo and the New York Mets are in agreement on an eight-year, $162 million contract.”
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the contract included a no-trade clause.
Nimmo is in sixth place in Major League Baseball in OBP since 2018. The star outfielder is in elite company in that regard as the only five players above him are all superstars. Mike Trout, Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, and Aaron Judge are the only players to have a higher OBP over that time period.
He also ranked in the Top 20 in BB% at 16th with 13.7 percent.
The Mets made a crucial move in re-signing Nimmo. He was one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. In the end, he will stay in New York. Nimmo tweeted out his response to the deal Thursday night as well. He tweeted, “LGM! Glad to be back! Let’s go!”
Others around the Mets and the MLB world followed in with reactions.
Longtime Mets radio broadcaster Howie Rose chimed in. Rose said, “Re signing Brandon Nimmo is huge for several reasons. Selfishly, I’m always happy when my personal favorites stick around, but that would have been one difficult hole to fill had he gone elsewhere.”
Truly not sure people realize how Brandon Nimmo ranks among all-time #Mets already. A healthy run through this contract and he will be near the top of so many franchise leaderboards. Stat courtesy of @baseball_ref pic.twitter.com/ylAEoO4eNW

Brandon Nimmo is back!
Would’ve been tough for Mets fans to stomach losing deGrom and Nimmo in a span of a week. https://t.co/9Z8CxeFotS
