Max Scherzer reportedly has yet to approve the blockbuster trade that would sent him to the Texas Rangers.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported Saturday night that the trade, which would send the New York Mets ace to Texas in exchange for shortstop Luisangel Acuña, is on hold because Scherzer hasn’t waived his no-trade clause.
“As of right now, it’s not happening,” Feinsand reported a source saying.
Feinsand noted that, “Things can change of course, so this saga is far from over.”
The Mets had reportedly said in early July that there were no plans to trade Scherzer, and although rumors had spread in recent days he was on the trading block, news of the Rangers deal surprised the baseball world. However, the 39-year-old Scherzer was not happy with the team’s direction, especially following the trade that sent closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins Thursday.
After Friday’s game, Scherzer said he planned to have a “conversation” with Mets brass.
“You traded our closer away,” he said. “A bunch of people are going to have to have conversations with the front office.”
The three-time Cy Young Award winner holds a 9-4 record with a 4.01 ERA (4.73 FIP) and a 1.189 WHIP this season. Scherzer could be a huge acquisition for the Rangers as they chase their first World Series appearance since 2011. The prospect of playing for a winner must surely weigh in Scherzer’s decision-making process.
