While MLB free agents aren’t free to sign with new teams until Monday, November 7, we’ve started to see some players make decisions regarding options or opt-outs on their contracts.
Thursday night, it was Marlins outfielder Jorge Soler’s turn to decide.
Soler, a 2023 All-Star, has informed the Marlins he will be opting out of his contract to test the free agency market, per Craig Mish of Sportsgrid.
Soler led the Marlins in home runs with 36, and spent the past two seasons in Miami.
Originally signed by the Cubs as an international free agent in June of 2012, Soler made his debut in Chicago during the 2014 season. He was a member of the World Series-winning 2016 Cubs, recording two hits in the seven-game affair. Following the 2016 season, Soler was traded to the Kansas City Royals for closer Wade Davis.
Soler spent the next four-and-a-half seasons with the Royals, hitting a career-high and Royals franchise record 48 home runs in the 2019 season. He was traded to the Braves at the 2021 Trade Deadline and went on to win his second career championship with Atlanta when the Braves defeated the Houston Astros in the 2021 World Series. Soler was named World Series MVP following the conclusion of the series in which he homered three times in six games.
The market for Soler should be red-hot this offseason, as he hits a lot of home runs and also is able to be used as a designated hitter if a team has a full outfield.
