Baseball injuries can be incredibly bizarre, and also incredibly sad. Indians Pitcher Tommy Hunter has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his lower back after he slipped on stairs in his home while carrying his child, Terry Francona told the media on Sunday. He’ll be put on the 15 day DL.

“He had a little mishap at home during the break,” Francona said, according to Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes. “He was carrying his child, missed a step, and banged his back trying to protect his child.

“He called the trainers, but thought he’d be OK in a couple of days. We tried to protect him the last couple of days, but he was out there throwing Saturday and feeling it.”

“We’re going to send him back to Cleveland and let a back specialist look at him so we get a better feel for what’s going on,” said Francona.

Hunter has a 3.74 ERA in 21.2 innings tossed this season for the AL Central leading Indians.
