Rodriguez, 26, has been having a tremendous rookie season for the Giants. The right-hander — and son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez — has a 2.25 ERA and has been worth 2.6 WAR in 80 innings.
Dereck Rodriguez has pitched 6+ innings and given up 2 runs or less in his last 8 starts. Yesterday, @DereckrodRF3 tossed another quality start. [powered by @Biofreeze] https://t.co/3oTExNxv2R#SFGiants pic.twitter.com/0WfGc5d6Fs

The 61-61 Giants already had slim playoff hopes (5% chances according to Five Thirty Eight, 2.8% chances according to FanGraphs), and losing Rodriguez for at least two turns through the rotation certainly isn’t going to help things.
