The Carlos Correa saga enveloped much of the MLB off-season. The multi-time All-Star shortstop and former World Series Champion drew interest from a variety of suitors. It appeared the San Francisco Giants were all but set to sign the former No. 1 overall pick. But a physical result scared the team off Correa, who later signed back with the Minnesota Twins.
San Francisco looked locked in with a long-term deal with Correa, but a knee injury kept them away from it. The team’s handling of the situation, including the fact that they scrubbed a press conference very late in the game, came under fire. Giants executive Farhan Zaidi commented on that decision on Tuesday.
KNBR tweeted, “Was scheduling the Carlos Correa press conference a mistake?
‘Yes. That was a mistake. That was my fault. And ultimately, you don’t want to get ahead of yourself in these process.’
-Giants president of baseball operations Farahn Zaidi w/ Murph & Mac.”
None too surprising that Zaidi would eat the issue like that. It was a bungled situation. They were at least, to a degree, proven right to balk at him after Correa saw similar issues surface when he was close to a deal with the New York Mets. But that doesn’t take away from the messy press conference situation. Nevertheless, what’s done is done, and the Giants will have to hope it doesn’t burn them too badly and that Correa doesn’t mash too much with the Twins.
