The New York Mets staved off the Philadelphia Phillies in dramatic fashion in London on Sunday. The two teams completed the annual London Series with a Sunday morning game for America on ESPN. The Phillies and Mets didn’t disappoint their audiences (though we’re not sure yet about their fanbases, especially Philly’s), and the game ended in epic fashion.
After the Phillies blew a lead in the top of the ninth, the team attempted to charge back in the bottom of the ninth.
But the Mets prevailed on a rare 2-3 double play to win the game!
It’s not often that you’ll see that variety of double play. It’s especially not often that you see it to win a game. But the Mets climbed out of this game winners, which seemed impossible at the start of the inning. A breakthrough stanza later, though, and the Mets were in position to win. Fortunately for the Metropolitans and their fans, they can breathe easy.
Philly? Well, they might still own one of MLB’s best records. But that was a tough one to swallow. Especially considering that they walked in a run and then let one come through on a wild pitch in the top of the 9th.
The MLB world, from all over, had plenty to say after the epic finish.
