Dylan Cease could remain in a White Sox uniform — at least for the first half of the season.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, that story could change come the trade deadline.
“Two rival execs now believe the White Sox will wind up keeping Dylan Cease into the regular season. ‘There is no pressure on them to lower their asking price,’ one said. ‘They’ll get what they want at the trade deadline.'”
The MLB trade deadline in Aug. 1.
This doesn’t mean anything necessarily, and the White Sox general manager Chris Getz sounded very fluid about the thoughts on Cease.
“It’s ever-evolving in terms of the urgency of other clubs,” Getz said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “It could be in the offseason. It could be at the deadline. It could be in May. There’s just so many different factors when you’re talking about 29 other clubs.”
Getz talked about the value Cease at the winter meetings and said there was a lot of interest in the 28-year-old. He also said they wouldn’t make a move unless it was an asset in the return to the White Sox. Some top prospects would be what the organization would be seeking.
The 2022 season is what ups his value.
He boasted a 2.20 ERA with 227 strikeouts in 184 innings and 32 starts. That same season, he was voted second in AL Cy Young Award voting and was even in MVP talks.
