The Colorado Rockies have been one of Major League Baseball’s punching bags for much of the past decade.
Colorado won the NL Wild Card in 2018, going 91-72 before getting swept in the NLDS by the Milwaukee Brewers. In the five seasons since, the team is just 298-409, a .421 win percentage. The Rockies have finished 40+ games out of first place in the NL West in each of the past two years, as well, having to regularly face off with heavyweights like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Despite all of this, the past is the past. Opening Day represents a clean slate and a fresh start. Did the Rockies take advantage of this fact Thursday night against the Diamondbacks?
After giving up two runs in the first inning, the Rockies bounced back in the second and got a run back to pull within one.
Then, in the bottom of the third, they gave up 14 runs. That’s right — 14 runs in one inning. The Diamondbacks batted around twice, sending 18 players to the plate. To make things worse for the Rockies, Arizona didn’t hit a single home run in the inning. Instead, it was just hit after hit after hit after hit. Starting pitcher Kyle Freeland gave up eight of the runs before reliever Anthony Molina came in to give up six more in his major league debut, which will certainly be one to remember.
It’s a 162-game season and anything could happen, but it would certainly be a shock to see the Rockies finish anywhere higher than last place in the NL West, yet again.
Social media had plenty of jokes for the Rockies.
MLB shouldn't wait. no questions asked, tonight, introduce the Rockies Rule. if a divisional opponent bats around twice in one inning on opening day after your worst season record ever, team ownership is immediately forfeit and the franchise is put up for auction
