Alec Mills threw the second no-hitter of the MLB season today in Milwaukee, with the Cubs beating the Brewers 12-0.
The last out came on a sharply hit grounder up the middle, but right at a well-positioned Javy Baez. Mills struck out five batters and walked three, but was fairly economical overall, throwing just 114 pitches (74 for strikes.) It’s the sixteenth no-hitter in Cubs history, and the first since Jake Arrieta no-hit the Reds in 2017. It’s also the second no-hitter of the shortened 2020 season and also the second 2020 no-hitter for a Chicago team after White Sox ace Lucas Giolito no-hit the Pirates in August.
The fan-less atmosphere in Milwaukee echoed one of the Cubs last no-hitters, when Carlos Zambrano no-hit the Astros in a game moved to Milwaukee due to Hurricane Ike. For Mills, a former walk-on at UT-Martin, was a 22nd round draft pick by the royals in 2012, and is only in the Cubs rotation thanks to injuries.
Now he has a no-hitter in the majors. Sports are wild.
