For one reason or another, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo decided to put his career on the line. And he decided to do so on the same night that the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks both have their respective seasons on the line in Tuesday night’s NLCS Game 7.
The 64-year-old Russo, who has been wrong time and time again about the Diamondbacks during the 2023 MLB postseason, has offered to retire on the spot if Arizona wins Games 6 and 7 in Philadelphia.
“I’ve been wrong on Arizona from day one,” Russo admitted during his Monday afternoon radio show. “I would not be stunned if they won tonight [Game 6], I would be floored. And I’ll say this right now, and Bob Raissman, write it down, if they win the next two games and win this series in seven games–if they win, I will retire on the spot.”
Unfortunately for Russo, the Diamondbacks are already halfway there. And Tuesday’s Game 7 will NOT feature Phillies ace Zack Wheeler on the bump—at least not to start the win-or-go-home elimination game.
Russo has doubled down so much, that’s he putting his career on the line, though that remains to be seen if he’ll follow through.
And while we know that Russo isn’t likely to retire, even if the Diamondbacks win, everyone on social media was saying the same thing about the radio personality’s vow. It was a waterfall of “Go Dbacks” and “America is rooting for Arizona.” There was nothing in between. Perhaps that should be telling as to how the general public feels about “Mad Dog.”

As if folks needed an extra reason to root for the D-Backs. And thanks to Chris Russo, they have another.
