The Boston Red Sox lost 7-6 to the New York Yankees in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Fenway Park (in a game that featured home runs No. 56 and 57 from Aaron Judge). The Yankees scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning before the Red Sox came up just short — scoring two runs — in the bottom half of the inning.
Veteran relief pitcher Jeurys Familia allowed the three runs (two earned, with a runner starting at second base in extra innings), one hit, and three walks in the 10th for Boston. All three runs came around to score on a Gleyber Torres bases-clearing double with two outs.
Well, shortly after the game ended, the Red Sox designated Familia for assignment, as he told the media.
NESN’s Jahmai Webster reports that Familia told the media that he plans to go back home (he’s from the Dominican Republic) and prepare for the 2023 MLB season.
Familia was also DFA’d by the Philadelphia Phillies in August before the Red Sox signed him to a minor-league deal on Aug. 9.
The right-hander was an All-Star for the New York Mets in 2016 and even led the majors in saves. Later that year, Familia was arrested on a domestic violence charge, and he was suspended for 15 games by Major League Baseball at the start of the 2017 season for violating the league’s domestic violence policy.
Familia, 32, put together a 6.09 ERA over 44 1/3 innings pitched this season. He entered Tuesday with a career ERA of 3.49 with 125 saves over 542 innings pitched.
