On Sunday, we saw a rare incident in the Toronto Blue Jays spring training matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Blue Jays’ right-hander Drew Hutchison was hit in the head by a throw from his own catcher, A.J. Jimenez, in an attempt to pick off a runner stealing second.

As Jimenez got up to throw the ball to pick off Tampa Bay’s Brad Miller, Hutchison turned to watch the ball arrive at second base, but the throw hit him in the back of the head instead.

Hutchison appeared to be fine. He would leave the game, but things could have certainly been much worse had he not turned his head. Miller would score eventually, and the run was charged to Hutchison.

The 25-year-old right-hander went 13-5 last season with the Blue Jays, after going just 11-13 in his second year in the league. He’s competing for the Blue Jays’ fifth starter job.
