Mike Fiers entered the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s Reds-Athletics game with a no-hitter, and he was incredibly fortunate to maintain the no-hitter through the inning.
With one out in the sixth, Cincinnati’s Kyle Farmer hit a pop-up into shallow right field. It appeared that it would drop for a hit, but A’s second baseman Jurickson Profar made a tremendous diving catch. Somehow, there isn’t video of this available at the moment, so we went to MLB.TV for a screengrab of the play:
That was a terrific play, but the next play was even better. Oakland center fielder/magician Ramón Laureano continued his trend of making spectacular plays by robbing the Reds’ Joey Votto of a home run (and in a 1-0 game, so it prevented the game from being tied):
At the time of this post, Fiers has a no-hitter through eight. He’s already thrown one no-hitter before- against the Los Angeles Dodgers while a member of the Houston Astros in 2015.
UPDATE: Mike Fiers indeed completed the no-hitter, and he got it done in style with this strikeout of Reds All-Star Eugenio Suarez on a nasty breaking ball.
